Blog-watch: Inspiration for dieting

September 18th, 2009 · No Comments · Diet, Psychology

One of the blogs I follow is Precision Nutrition.  John Berardi is usually well worth listening to when it comes to nutrition (though I don’t always agree with the views of some of the other authors on the blog), and they often have write-ups on interesting dietary topics and scientific studies.

Last week there was a post that was a bit different to usual, discussing the motivation of booking yourself a professional photo shoot and showing how one of the team members used a photo shoot date to trim down that last bit to that “competition-ready” figure.  If you click through to the detailed article you can see the before and after photos (personally, I think Amanda looks pretty fantastic in the “before” photos).

The post, and the backing article, struck a chord with me and was surprisingly inspirational.  I’ve often found that having something to work towards which is fixed in the diary can get me going when I’m starting to lag and can’t find anything to remotivate myself.

For example, I’m committed to this beach holiday.  I could have stayed as I was, but at the back of my mind I’d been hankering for an excuse to trim down to my own best-effort “competition-ready” figure.  The beach holiday was just what I was after.

But on its own that wasn’t going to be persuasive at those dark moments of hunger or exhaustion.  So the holiday merely set the date.  For the real inspiration I’ve also:

  • Got the bikinis out and put them somewhere where I’ll see them nearly every day as a reminder;
  • Written about it here – if that doesn’t give me any accountability, I’m not sure what will;
  • Taken some “before” photos and got a date in the diary for some (equally unprofessional) “after” photos to be taken, the day before we go on holiday.  Unfortunately they probably won’t be posted up for now to avoid any complications with work – though I’d much prefer to be posting them up for the added incentive.

I’ve not gone for a professional photo shoot, since this blog gives me plenty of accountability already.  Would a fixed date professional photo shoot motivate you?  What other things motivate you for cutting phases?
