Blog-watch: All about the glutes

September 25th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Training

This week’s blog-watch was going to be all about Vitamin D, which has had a lot of publicity recently.  You may yet get this as a bonus post sometime soon.  However, something else has really got me fired up in the last few days.

As you know from my recent article about the best exercise for losing weight, I’m really focusing on my glutes at the moment.  I’m trying really hard to get my pancake flat rear to get that amazing shape that figure athletes have but without having to use posing positions (posing positions play merry hell with my lower back).  Yes, I may be chasing the impossible, but I’ll give it a go.

So, here’s a short but effective list of articles (and a blog post) I’ve received, discovered or revisited this week which have inspired me to keep my rear at the front of the priority list:

  1. Dispelling the Glute myth:  If you read nothing else about working the glutes, read this article by The Glute Guy.  The advice is comprehensive, understandable, believable, and looks like it can also be followed, which is a big bonus.
  2. How Strong are your Glutes Really?:  A good article by Nick Tumminello on Figure Athlete giving some really useful ways to get a feel for whether you can connect with your glutes and whether they actually have any strength.  My recommendation would be to read this article at home since my first instinct was to try each exercise as I read the article.
  3. The 50-Yard Dash:  This is an old one, but one I felt compelled to revisit it after reading Bret Contreras’s Dispelling the Glute Myth.  TC addresses the gluteal fold and how to develop the upper hamstring and lower glute region to eliminate it – crucial for perfecting an eye-catching feminine derriere, but probably a workout I’ll now leave until the weather starts to warm up again in the spring.
  4. A Track Athlete’s Guide to Great Glutes:  For something a bit more recent than TC’s 50-Yard Dash article, try this.  However, the routines look evil, so you may want some serious willpower to get through them.  It seems that part 2 of this series has yet to be written.
  5. Sprint for your Life:  Taking the sprinting theme a bit further, Mark Sisson has come up with a fun, motivating and entertaining way to get in some sprinting without taking the rigid “intervals” approach.  Something for some Saturday afternoon fun.

Starting today, I will be kicking off on Phase 2 of Bret Contreras’ Glute program, in addition to the current program.  I’ll let you know the results.
