Blog-watch: some postural advice from Mark Sisson

October 9th, 2009 · No Comments · Training

Just a short one today to share with you two valuable posts that Mark Sisson has done recently on Mark’s Daily Apple.

Post 1: You don’t know squat

This is a post about our natural position of squatting to evacuate the bowels: the position your body really wants to be in.

Having had haemorrhoids (apparently lots of people who do large quantities of multi-day walking trips have this problem – Ranulph Fiennes discusses it in one of his books, I think it might be in ‘Mind Over Matter’) and also having spent days on end out in the wilderness where you just find the nearest low-lying shrub or rock whenever you feel the urge to go, I totally support the message Mark is trying to get across.

You don’t know how good a bowel movement can be until you’ve felt the need and squatted down while in the wide open countryside (though the views of the mountains usually add to the sensation).

Better view than usual?

Post 2: You might want to sit down for this

This builds on the previous squatting article and is very relevant to the issues I try to address with my mini-office workouts in 15 Ways to Survive a Desk Job.

There are plenty of postural reasons why we shouldn’t spend our lives sat in chairs and there are often ways to help limit the postural damage you may do to your body at those times when you have to sit down.

If the second post gets your interest then I also recommend that you read the second article in the (De)-Constructing Computer Guy series on Testosterone Nation by Tony Gentilcore and Jimmy Smith which gives 23 ways to deal with non-workout postural issues.
