Supplement review: Nature’s Best fish oil

October 30th, 2009 · No Comments · Diet

Myth:  Because a product says it has 1000mg of fish oil, it has more omega-3 than a 500mg capsule.

I explained on Wednesday that the main omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil are EPA and DHA.  If you read the back of most fish oil packs and total up the EPA and DHA you may well find that there is only about 120mg in a capsule – in my experience that’s about the average for most of the easily available supermarket brands, with a few products hitting the 300s.

The supplement market is therefore ripping off consumers by hiding behind the fish oil total and not explaining the fact that if you are taking your fish oil for omega-3 then their product is actually quite weak.

I’m not normally the sort to enthuse about specific supplement products.  However, this is one I have recommended to a huge number of people here in the UK.  I’m aware that the guys at Testosterone Nation have developed a high potency EPA/DHA supplement with 770mg total EPA/DHA per tablet, but this is one of those things that can easily get caught up with import issues, so it was important for me to find something readily available in the UK instead.

Nature’s Best produce a 1100mg fish oil tablet that contains nearly 700mg of omega-3 fatty acids and is so far the strongest one I’ve found available on the UK market.  While the price may seem high compared to some other fish oil products, if you took enough of the other products to equal the strength of a single Nature’s Best capsule, you would end up spending more.

The capsules are surprisingly easy to swallow (given their size) and unlike some fish oil and cod liver oil tablets, they don’t taste fishy.  Within weeks of moving over to this product I had noticed a significant change in my joints while weight training and changes were even noticeable in hair shine and nail strength.

Overall, this is a genuinely worthwhile supplement to take, which can take pride in the title of “one of the UK’s strongest omega-3s”.  Though that said, I still find I need to take 10 capsules a day to get the right amount of omega-3s and I further supplement it with a little liquid cod liver oil…

Have you found another brand of fish oil tablet in the UK that is even better than this?  If so, I would love to hear about it.
