A brief collection of articles that you can forward on to your female friends about why they should be doing resistance training and not going running everyday to get lean and fit.
- 4 things your girlfriend should know: an entertaining introduction by Tony Gentilcore for anyone who needs convincing that women should do resistance training. There’s not a huge amount of depth to it but it’s a starting point for the disbeliever. I’ve often forwarded it on to female friends who have told me that weight training will make me huge (if nothing else, they can watch the video of Tony’s girlfriend deadlifting 209 lbs).
- How women can easily and quickly get into shape: a nice little summary blog post about using resistance training. Easy reading for those who aren’t convinced yet by the idea and a brilliant trio of exercises being suggested – deadlifting, pressing and grip. I completely agree that grip is underestimated and, I believe, undertrained. I do two grip workouts a week using some grippers that we got from Ultimate Grip. Ideally I should be doing four, but my leg workouts use heavy dumbbells so much that I feel I get two partial grip workouts on those days anyway. I recently saw an article where someone was using a weight vest because their grip was too weak to hold the dumbbells they needed for a max effort split squat. If that’s the case you should improve your grip, not bypass it! Anyway, it’s always impressive if the woman present can open the jar that none of the men can open!
- Q and A: Getting my wife to train: another Tony Gentilcore, but this time a blog post from this week which has a lovely summary and also touches on the subject of why throwing yourself into running to get fit is not a good idea. I’ve got a blog-post brewing on the subject of should women run and will post it up when it’s done.
- Fat loss training for Halloween 2010: for a final bit of inspiration, if they need it, to get them started doing some resistance training…
