Stealing a good idea from Chris, over at The Garage Gym Online, I’ve come to realise that my Google Reader “starred items” file has been getting out of hand. There’s just so much good stuff out there that I’d like to bring to your attention and not all of them can be made into blog-watch posts. In fact some of them are completely off the topic of female fitness and diet…
Ever since I discovered Google Reader I have become an RSS-feed addict. Every morning I get to work early so that I can spend 15 minutes before I start working to trawl through a veritable treasury of interesting posts, articles, pictures and other information that people have posted during the previous 24 hours.
The great thing about Google Reader is that it also makes suggestions of other things that may be of interest to you, based on the feeds you are subscribed to and the items you have starred as being of particular interest. As a result I’ve found even more interesting, wild and wacky things to read over the last few months.
Anyway, enough of the Google Reader sales pitch. You aren’t here for that. You’re here for the links. Here they are in no particular order.
- I love eggs. I’ve mentioned before the problems with the “Eggs are bad for Cholesterol” argument frequently given by medics and how this is based on out-dated research, funded by Kellogg’s, that was carried out before Good and Bad Cholesterol were known about. John Berardi at Precision Nutrition has now released a short video about eggs which refers to recent research suggesting that eggs don’t impact on cholesterol levels.
- For a good laugh, or to make you wince and cry, watch this compilation of clips of different people deadlifting. Suddenly I’m not surprised that so many people claim that deadlifting is bad for your back…
- Tony Gentilcore did an interview with Nia Shanks a little while ago. She’s a guru on fat loss and has some interesting soundbites on the subject.
- Pull up inspiration for women everywhere is on hand from Crystal West, a 44 year old who has posted up videos of pull up feats I can only dream of at the moment.
- Two recently reported studies have got under my skin as missing a vital bit of the research. The first claims that too much exercise may lead to arthritis for middle-aged people. What it fails to mention is whether the subjects were taking fish oils and glucosamine to protect their joints, what their diet was like and a whole host of other things which are known to impact on arthritis.
- The second study that irritated me claims that exercise brings no relief for period pain. It seems from the BBC article that the scientists didn’t ask what diet the students were on, or change their exercise levels and see what impact that had on their period pain. Every woman has a different base level of period pain, those doing more exercise may well have been suffering less pain than they would without the exercise but still more than some other lucky women who did less exercise than them.
- I know Christmas has been and gone, but I love this picture of cats playing in a Christmas tree. Reminds me of the havoc Jake (the neighbour’s cat) sometimes creates when he comes to visit us.
- As a woman who loves the outdoors life, I can get quite evangelical about it. So I was overjoyed to find out about a new website, SheJumps, a non-profit that aims to increase women’s participation in outdoor activities.
- It seems that antibiotics may not be the answer to better health. But then you knew that already, right?
- As a seasoned road cyclist I love the wry humour of these 10 reasons for motorists to love cyclists. Perhaps my love of these is due to my very English idea of what’s funny though.
- I was going to stick at ten links, but here’s a bonus link for this week. The Science of Sport started a series on exercise and weight loss on Friday. I found the first post in the series to be interesting common sense reading and I’m now looking forward to the rest.
I hope you enjoy some of these links. This has only made a small dent into all my favourite articles that I’ve been collecting together recently so look out for the next instalment very soon!
