When I get the opportunity, there are a few podcasts that I make sure I listen to. One of these is Super Human Radio, a regular hour-long show that is broadcast over the internet during which the host, Carl Lanore, interviews a guest on a specific topic.
The topics they cover represent the full spectrum of the fitness and nutrition industry, discussing topics from eating raw meat and using steroids through to the best training regimes to build muscle or strip fat. Previous guests that spring to mind include Loren Cordain talking in depth about the Paleo Diet, Mike Boyle discussing functional training and Randy Roach discussing, well, everything that Randy Roach talks about in the realm of raw meat and training!
I enjoy the show because Carl tries so hard to bring an unbiased perspective to his interviews. He clearly has his own views on certain topics but he tries to let the interviewee have a chance to make their case even when he disagrees with them, although it is clear when he does agree with the person he is interviewing since he tends to get very enthusiastic and animated.
At the end of 2009, Carl announced that he was going to start acting on feedback that the show was sometimes male-centric and have some more women-specific shows during 2010. The first three particularly women-specific shows have now been on air and I have included links to these below, but hurry to listen to these since the earliest one is already unavailable now.
Carl has recently set up a member’s area of the website where you can access archived shows if you want to delve back to the shows that have been deleted.
- The Feminine Perspective On Body Building – Guest: Moira Berman (Show 402 – no longer available) – Carl introduces the concept of trying to do more women-focussed shows through 2010 by interviewing the lady behind the site “Six Pack at Sixty”. She talks about how she got into weight training and how body building is usually important to most women, just not by that name. If you want to get into shape and “tone up” then, essentially you want to build a better body – body building. This isn’t a technical show, instead being a general discussion round the key topics for women, and it’s nice to hear the perspective of a different woman.
- Women Choosing A Personal Trainer – Guest: Moira Berman (Show 409) – Moira returns to chat with Carl about the different issues that face women when selecting a gym or personal trainer. While this wasn’t particularly relevant to me, since I train in my garage, I thought some of her suggestions on how to deal with trainers who you start to feel uncomfortable with and things to look for in a new gym were interesting.
- Women And Steroids. What Works And At What Cost – Guest: Anthony Roberts (Show 419) – Personally I’m not interested in using steroids. However, if you are interested in the subject then I strongly recommend that you listen to this show. I was truly frightened by some of the horror stories of women who had taken dosages that were as high as those recommended for men, since dosages for women are harder to get details on, and had suffered from some truly horrid side effects as a result. If you think you want to use steroids then you should make sure you are well aware of the possible side effects for women before you begin and this show is an excellent starting point.
- Staying On Track With New Year’s Resolutions – Guest: Moira Berman (Show 437) – Moira discusses with Carl the reasons why we fail at keeping our New Year’s resolutions in the gym and things we can do to help us keep on track. There’s some good nuggets of advice in this, including some ideas about how to work through the necessary chores of life with our parters and wording things in a positive way to help those we care about keep on track with their own goals - advice I will try to apply to other areas of life. The quote of the show is: “Extraordinary results come from doing ordinary things consistently”. A good motto to live by, I think.
I really recommend that you sign up for the RSS feed from the show to make sure you catch any future shows covering women’s issues and, in fact, anything else being discussed that might be of interest to you.
