I seem to have a bizarre mix of technical and random links for this week. Something for everyone – I hope you enjoy them!
- To kick things off this week for the women who read my blog, here’s some advice on how to find the best sports bra for you.
- If you want to scare yourself, This Is Why You’re Fat has page after page of photos of food. Not just any food. There are images of some of the most frightening meals imaginable, including Doughnut Upside-down Cake and the Double Coronary Burger.
- I enjoy cycling so I was pleased to hear that a new cycle racing league for women has been launched in London for women of all levels. When I get a chance I may well go and check it out in person.
- If you love meat but work on a budget then it’s always worth considering buying an entire carcass and butchering it yourself. But where to start? Jason Kottke posted up a video some time ago showing how to butcher a side of beef.
- I’ve just started adding weight to my pull ups and chins this week, so I love this inspirational video of a women doing pull ups with a weights vest which Tony Gentilcore has shared. The anecdote about the woman “caught” deadlifting in her gym is also both amusing and upsetting. You do have to wonder whether she was singled out so harshly because she was a woman.
- Thanks to Chris at Conditioning Research for sharing a study suggesting that your sex influences what you choose to eat and that your food is yet another part of the complex and subtle sexual indicator/interest game. I’m sure I was eating anything and everything in sight when I first met Chris (my partner, not Chris from Conditioning Research) but perhaps I’ve just forgotten.
- A fascinating study from the European Journal of Applied Physiology suggests that an excellent way to speed up your recovery after training is to immerse your face in cold water.
- I am fascinated by the subject of what foods are good or bad for our bodies and I have to admit that I have been very strongly against anything soy-based. This interesting letter, posted up by Coach Dos, has given me some new information on soy products and should help people make up their own minds. I do recommend that you read both sides of the argument and since the link on Coach Dos’s blog to the original article by Kaayla Daniel is no longer valid, I suggest reading the article that was written for Figure Athlete (the women’s element of Testosterone Nation) which is no doubt similar. Personally I will continue to avoid soy.
- The Outside Blog have done an interview with Ellen Miller. Talented female mountaineers are not that common and Ellen is an inspiration even for men who are out on the mountains having become the only woman to summit Everest from both sides in the same year, just a year after having a hip replacement.
- Cosmopolitan (that ever-reliable source of fashion and celebrity news) advise us in a highly amusing article that thongs are now out of fashion, to be replaced by boy shorts, whatever they are. Personally I think thongs still have their uses in life, having only joined the bandwagon a couple of years ago and found them good for long-distance bike rides (no sores from the seams) and wet weather walking (no clinging cotton when you get drenched through), but it sounds like I need to go underwear shopping for those smart evenings out if I want to stay in fashion!
- And finally, Seth Godin reminds us why they want us to fit in. I’m proud to say that I continue to refuse…
Have a good weekend everyone. I’m going to head out shopping to find those boy shorts!
