Great links for the weekend!

February 19th, 2010 · No Comments · Links

Lot’s of women-specific links this week.  I’m particularly fond of the Baileys and Ferrero Rocher cupcake links.

  • Do you like Baileys?  I used to love it (I find it a bit too creamy these days) but it was an expensive luxury.  On The Cupcake Project (provider of the Ferrero Rocher cupcake recipe) they’ve devised a recipe for homemade Baileys.  The perfect present for almost every woman?
  • More inspiring women – this week the spotlight is on Tiffany Forni who earned the coveted title of BodyBuilding.com’s Female Transformation of the Year in early 2009 or late 2008 (I’ve struggled to find the exact date).
  • That’s Fit have provided a lovely set of photos to highlight the top ten pregnancy superfoods.  I was really pleased to see that most of them were paleo-friendly foods as well.  That salmon looks delicious!
  • British Cycling are running an online survey to identify the key barriers to cycling for women.  I strongly encourage you to get along there and tell them what you think.
  • For some humour, try taking a peek at these photos of how to store and organise cats.  Our visiting cat, Jake (who technically belongs to our neighbour), would never let you get near enough to him to try any of these things with him!
  • We’re past the January flurry of people dieting which seems a good time for some reminders.  Testosterone Nation did a handy article last month with top tips on fat loss from several of their contributors.  I don’t agree with all of them, but there are some good reminders in this list.
  • Mike T Nelson wrote an article some time ago about static stretching and whether it is really beneficial.  Personally, I must admit that I don’t do much static stretching, so it was good to read something that justified my lack of stretching!
  • Following up on the Mike T Nelson article, a study by Aguino and others showed that strength work on a muscle in a lengthened position gave better long-term stretch tolerance than stretching, which supports Mike’s idea that there are better ways to achieve lengthening of muscles than static stretching and also explains why a few weeks of RDLs did more for me than years of yoga and other static stretches.
  • I love the outdoors and I have an affinity for snow, so this trailer for the film Australis: An Antarctic Sky Odyssey, recording Chris Davenport’s Antarctica skiing adventure has really got me fired up (though I’m more of a cross-country than downhill skier myself).  There is some beautiful scenery and fantastic wildlife in this video.
  • Of course, it is always possible to have too much snow
  • If you aren’t a snow lover, summer is definitely on the way in the northern hemisphere.  The mornings are lighter earlier and I feel like we’re nearly there (yes, I have an affinity for snow, but I also like the sunshine).  Since summer is coming I felt it was time to revisit this post from NephroPal about summer and winter modes and how these should impact on our dietary choices.
  • A handy iPhone application for women – iPeriod provides a tool with which you can track your menstrual cycle, moods and a few other things at the same time.
  • True to his word, Tony Gentilcore has done a superb women-specific post this week on the topic of women and push ups.  Yes, we can do “real” push ups and Tony’s got lots of tips here on ways to improve your push ups.

Finally, this week I’d like to draw your attention to this short video by Leigh Peele about insulin and fat loss:

Have a lovely weekend everyone!
