Great links for the weekend!

Here’s a real mixed bag after last week’s serious collection.

  • I’m going to kick off with an inspirational Finnish woman this year who is currently training to become the first Finnish woman to summit Everest alongside another female Finn who is also aiming for the title.  The competition element is likely to keep them both going through the darker moments.
  • So you know fizzy soda drinks are bad for you but you just can’t kick the habit.  Try reading that it can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 87% and then tell me you just can’t stop drinking it.
  • Apparently women secretly desire hairy geeks and not those tall dark handsome men, despite our behaviour with photos of finely chiselled athletes and actors.  Good news for the general populous and bad news for all those bodybuilders out there?
  • Flex magazine did a brief comparison of yoghurt and cottage cheese – cottage cheese came out as the overall winner.  I hate cottage cheese so I’ll stick with yoghurt and leave the cottage cheese consumption in our household to Chris.
  • This week’s cute animal photo is all about the small ones.
  • As the weather starts to warm I find myself more tempted to train outdoors and just muck about with a sledgehammer or the tyres.  Perhaps even with the sandbags.  With that in mind it’s refreshing to return to this short article on how to build strength like a caveman.
  • It seems that Jamie Oliver, beloved of many British households where he has tried to reignite interest in eating Real Food, is now trying to do the same thing in the US.  Given his choice of starting location I can only wish him good luck!
  • This week’s interview is with Lizzy Ostro, a rising star in bikini competition.
  • I strongly believe that bread is bad for you.  But this photo just turned my stomach…
  • A while back Bodybuilding.com did an article for Figure Athletes on the perfect workout series to sculpt the upper body.  I was amused that they are aiming the article at women but use a man for all the photos of the exercises.  While I agree with some of the exercises they suggest (pull ups, T-bar rows, dumbbell presses, press ups), nothing targets the back and develops muscle like a deadlift and it doesn’t get a mention.
  • Speaking of deadlifts, here’s a lovely article all about the different deadlift styles and the sumo deadlift in particular.  I’m missing sumos now that I’m back into a cycle of standard deadlifts.

Finally, here’s a video of the Norwegian Alpine Ski Team dancing on top of a mountain, in their lycra suits, to Michael Jackson.  Genius!
