Great links for the weekend!

April 2nd, 2010 · 2 Comments · Links

Lots of health-related links this week.  What can I say?  With spring arriving and summer round the corner I’m on a health-drive!

  • Here’s a woman who likes her challenges (and the snow).  Lei Wang is hoping to be only the tenth person to complete the challenge of seven summits (the highest summits on seven different continents) and skiing to both the north and south poles.  I particularly liked her quote that “pursuing a dream, even if I may fail, is better than not trying at all. Life only becomes full of life when you live it with passion. How do you have passion without a dream?”
  • As a brief read, That’s Fit have published an article of Easy Ways to Healthy Living.  There’s nothing ground-breaking, but it’s always good to be reminded.
  • As a reminder and leveller for us all, Dan John posted a heartfelt and honest blog post reminding us all that even our training heros have bad days.
  • For a good laugh have a look at the first half of the post announcing the new logo for London Cyclist.  I nearly fell off my chair laughing given how well this parodies the creation of some incredibly simple logos.
  • I was really pleased to find that, made the right way, mustard can be considered to be a health food.  Nothing brightens up plain food more when you are on a cutting diet than a bit of mustard on the side.
  • Mike T Nelson reminds us that the key is to make it look easy.  This is something that applies in all walks of life and is something I’ve often applied to playing the violin as well.  Many years ago I learned that if you relax and make it look easy you are probably genuinely making it easier for yourself and can therefore push yourself further.  As Mike says, this generally give you better results.
  • The story of a woman who lost weight so that she could undergo knee surgery and, after losing 154 pounds, found she no longer needed the knee surgery because she’d taken the injury-causing strain off her knees is a sad indication of today’s society but also a heart-warming success story.
  • Staying on the health theme, the PaNu site recently posted an article explaining the differences between Type I and II diabetes and how diet can help with treating them.  With Type II diabetes now so common in the Western world, it’s increasingly important to spread the word about the non-medicinal ways people can treat, control and avoid it.
  • You’re never too old to exercise!  If you keep telling yourself you are, then try watching these two videos.
  • This one’s odd.  It seems that the fluorescent lighting in supermarkets can improve the nutrient levels in fresh spinach.

Let’s redress the balance from last week (or perhaps not – see what you think).  Here’s Anita Renfroe’s follow up song for the Dads amongst you.
