Great links for the weekend!

April 23rd, 2010 · No Comments · Links

Some essential and useful links this week as well as a few more light-hearted ones:

  • Tony Gentilcore gave me a great laugh this week by linking to a video of something that is possibly the most ridiculous cardio idea around – I really hope Kangoo doesn’t take off (or perhaps secretly I do, so that I can watch people being ridiculous).
  • For anyone who is endlessly mystified by insulin and insulin-resistance (it’s a confusing topic if you aren’t concentrating fully), then I suggest reading this easy reader-friendly introduction.
  • There’s a new women’s cycle team in the UK – MuleBar.  As a bonus, they were also interviewed on a podcast recently with some amusing comments about the “abuse” they suffer as well-made-up cyclists.  Hooray for women’s cycling!  I’m tempted to put a touch of make up on before I go cycling this weekend.
  • As an advocate of the Paleo Diet, I’m fairly anti corn oil anyway, but this article mentioning studies showing that corn and other industrial seed oil promote the growth of prostate cancer cells in mice, while butter and lard don’t is yet another nail in the coffin of industrial seed oil.
  • While on the topic of Paleo, there was a great flame-war on Richard Nikoley’s blog this week when he did a post saying that he couldn’t see what was wrong with white potatoes.  Personally I cut white potatoes out of my diet some time before I went to a Paleo diet because I was having a push on cleaning up my gut and resolving any potential leaky gut (Mark Sisson did a good post about gut health this week) and wanted to avoid the toxins in the white potatoes.  Since then I’ve found I thrive on a lower carb diet so they haven’t really featured much in my diet.  However, I’m not averse to a white potato every now and then, especially if it’s a tastily well-done jacket potato.
  • Mistress Krista has put together a helpful collection of some excellent research resources for those of us who like to check our sources – a useful post to bookmark.
  • There are an increasing number of female mountaineers and it’s really good to see that there are also several women taking on the role of mountain guides.  If you need proof of this then you only need to read this article and the comments section for some female guides who work outside Europe (there’s an entire Female Guides Company working in the Alps).
  • I got a fantastic laugh a couple of days ago from reading an article in The Guardian about the Bolivian president, Evo Morales, who has announced that male pattern baldness and homosexuality are caused by men eating chickens injected with female hormones during rearing.  I particularly liked the fact that “Morales’s theories do not appear to have been immediately accepted by the scientific community”.  It is a bit ridiculous to think that someone’s sexuality can be affected by this but, on a slightly more serious note, there are all sorts of side-effects that are believed to be caused by consuming meat that has been injected with hormones of all types, so it is still something to be wary of.
  • If you’re looking for some tips on making it to being Ms Fitness USA then a good starting point may be this interview with Ms Fitness USA 2010, Taryn Bagrosky.
  • It’s “back to basics” with Brian St Pierre for some simple reminders for how to maintain good nutrition.  Thanks Brian!
  • Or alternatively, you can eat “too healthily” and almost kill yourself, like this woman did.  Though you have to really question the definition of “healthy” in this context.  You have to worry if Sarah Jessica Parker is in danger of going the same way – this new skinny look is really not good and she seems to have lost all the muscle on her arms that I used to be so impressed by.
  • More comedy cycling “advice” from Tejvan with these “tips” for cycle commuting.  I particularly like the thought that traffic lights are ornamental street furniture.  They gave me a great laugh.
  • Finally, I really recommend checking out this list of the most influential female voices online.  Unfortunately I do have to confess that I hadn’t heard of most of them – I suspect they are mostly in the US – but even so, it’s always good to read about inspiring women.

It’s been far too long since I did some less sensible links or included a video, so here’s a creature feature of an octopus stealing a video camera (while it was recording).

Have a really good weekend everyone!
