Great links for the weekend!

April 30th, 2010 · No Comments · Links

Lots of good stuff this week, including some technical bits for those who want to delve into the science.

  • Several people have been pointing out the seasonal nature that Paleo eating ought to take to be truly honest to our evolutionary heritage and Mark Sisson has addressed the large and unwieldy topic of fructose consumption (always a bit of an uncertain topic anyway) and seasonality.
  • Looking as some less healthy food approaches, I’m not aware that the KFC Double-Down burger has made it to the UK but I’ll be terrified to see the results if it does.  In the interests of a balanced blog though I’m going to bravely share a balanced (really?)review of the monster burger.  After all, it’s got to be better than a slice of this terrifying cake.
  • Would you like to be able to learn more?  Try having a nap in the middle of the day.  It may be the answer to your problems.
  • Have you ever wondered how some places manage to have such excellent cycle safety records?  In Sevenoaks, this author believes that it is because the thought of cycling in Sevenoaks, with the hair-raising drivers, is so terrifying that nobody cycles.  The catch is that, until there are plenty of cycle accidents, nobody will do anything to make Sevenoaks a safer place to cycle.  It’s a bit chicken and egg really.
  • I’m not a big coffee drinker, but I’m sure plenty of you will be pleased to read that there are yet more benefits to drinking coffee than the ones you already knew about.  Chris should particularly enjoy this link, given his love of coffee.
  • If you want directing to some good women’s fitness sites, then this list from Tony Gentilcore is an excellent starting point.  There are plenty more to add to the list but that should at least give you some good reading matter to get started.
  • After linking to a paleo-related flamewar on potatoes last week I’ve now got a link from Don at Primal Wisdom on the paleo perspective for rice.  If you’re interested in paleo or low-carb for health reasons then it’s probably worth having a read of this.
  • Useful tip of the week – if you want to appear more attractive, date someone who is attractive.  A terrifying thought.  Should we all choose our partners with a view to how we will subsequently look?  Will they then want to date us if we are less attractive than them?
  • I loved this article in The Guardian about Jenny Copnall, five times national cross-country mountain bike champion.  Inspiring stuff.
  • Staying with The Guardian for a moment, and going totally off the Paleo thread, if you enjoy baking and you are a fan of the perfect English Scone then here’s some testing and advice on how to make the perfect scone.  I must say that reading the article and looking at the pictures I found myself craving a scone with minimal scone and lashings of fresh fruit and clotted cream (I used to pile my scones high with clotted cream as a child and leave the jam and butter out).  Perhaps I should pick up a pot of clotted cream and some early-season strawberries on the way home?
  • For those of you who want to know all about cholesterol and who have already worked their way through my two posts on the subject, try this old Precision Nutrition article for more information.
  • Continuing the cholesterol discussion.  I’ve previously written about statins and I’ve now found this analysis by Michael Eades of a recent statins study.  What do you think?
  • I’ve been watching the Bourne Triology with Chris over the last few weeks and commented during Bourne Ultimatum that I had never been to Berlin but would like to go.  A few days later, Helen Pidd wrote a blog post about why cycling in Berlin is a dream.  It’s really got me hooked on the idea of going out there and hiring a bike while I do my tourist bit -- now I just have to convince Chris to come too.
  • If you would like to know about ten women whose advice should be followed by every entrepreneur then I suggest reading this list.  Shame they’re all dead (although that is the point of the list).
  • Finally, another cycling link (sorry -- the summer season is upon us) for all those in England with details of 10 London cycling events you shouldn’t miss out on.  “Shouldn’t” or not, I’ll be missing the London Naked Bike Ride!

Our neighbour’s cat, Jake, who has been a regular guest in our house now since last autumn has inadvertantly started bringing his housemate along too.  This tiny grey kitten seemed terrified of Jake but determined to join the party and fight for a share of the chicken, tuna and sardine scraps that get put aside for them in our house.  In honour of this new “addition” to the family I’ve found a video celebrating the antics of cats.

With all that mention of clotted cream earlier I’m off to the shops to get myself a nice big pot of it as a not-really-Paleo treat for the weekend.  I hope everyone in the UK has a good bank holiday weekend and manages to see some sunshine!
