Great links for the weekend!

Lots of chunky and varied information this week.  Though I’m most fond of the Ode to Chocolate near the end.  I’m biased, I’ve just been on a weight loss diet for a few weeks!

  • We start with a farewell to Michelle.  I highlighted Michelle’s diet a few months ago – she had severe diabetes and had managed to get this under control without the use of insulin by converting to the paleo diet.  However, she recently posted to say that she had found her blood sugars starting to increase again and had given up on the paleo diet having concluded that it didn’t work after all.  I was particularly intrigued by her comment that she found it “too restrictive and very difficult to follow”.  To be fair to Michelle, her extreme circumstances meant that she had to follow it to the letter, but I’m sure I won’t be alone in finding this statement intriguing.  I do not find it restrictive to follow 100%, though I choose not to do so at all times, but then, I rarely eat out or spend time away from home looking for snacks.  Those are the times I start to struggle because our society is built around a belief that we require the non-paleo foods.
  • Different women have different skills.  In the case of some women, their skill is in comedy.  The career of being a comedian historically was very much owned by men so it is really pleasing to see that there are women getting recognition as comedians and making successful careers out of it.  The Guardian produced an article showcasing ten female comedians – congratulations ladies!
  • For anyone who is interested in the issues of pregnancy and the associated questions of exercise and diet, Cassandra Forsythe wrote a brilliant article a few weeks ago about post-partum recovery – both getting it wrong and right.  It’s a wonderfully honest account and is probably an important read for anyone who is going through the pregnancy journey at the moment.
  • There are some frightening images of horrid heart-killing foods out there.  However, this series of photos providing directions on making a bacon and cheese stuffed pizza burger was truly terrifying!
  • Mistress Krista had a bit of a rant a few weeks ago about the fact that we are all so busy with our lives that we are no longer able to just sit and relax and enjoy the simple art of existing.  It’s a good reminder that we should all put our feet up sometimes and practise this dying artform.
  • I seem to always be going on about being barefoot and the benefits of it, so I was interested to read a couple of articles about it.  Firts was Mike T Nelson’s views on being barefoot.  Specifically, I was reminded by his post about the fact that some Powerlifting associations will not let you lift in barefeet or Vibrams.  I can understand the “no bare feet” principle (thanks to the Health & Safety culture that we have) but no Vibrams?  In support of wearing Vibrams (or being barefoot) to lift to improve health, my second link on being barefoot is from Jordan Vezina who tried going back to Chuck Taylors for his workouts (having previously done them barefoot).  Despite Chuck Taylors being practically flat he starting to get knee pain.  More support for the idea that Powerlifting Associations should let us lift barefoot or in Vibrams if we want to?
  • Something of vital importance for women who want to have an active outdoor life is how to deal with periods and peeing outdoors.  I’ve previously written about the Mooncup to help deal with periods, but Sara, also known as Rock Climber Girl, did an excellent post covering both issues in plenty of detail.
  • While on the topic of being a woman in the great outdoors, I loved the idea of dressing up in a little flattering skirt for my outdoor adventures.  Who says we have to dress like men in order to do these things?  The Tough Girl Skirt has definitely inspired me to see if I can find something similar for our walking and cycle tours.
  • Do you sometimes find yourself giving in to those cravings?  If you get those cravings and believe that Fitness Athletes (and other women who maintain similarly amazing figures) are some sort of Other Being who don’t get those cravings then think again.  Try reading this very honest account of how a Figure Athlete deals with those cravings.
  • Staying on the cravings theme, are you a woman who gets cravings for chocolate.  I crave very dark chocolate (85% or darker) when I get those cravings.  However, a true chocoholic has written an Ode to Chocolate.  Beautiful!

Berardi was interviewed on the Canadian program On The Line.  It’s on You Tube in eight parts.  I’ve attached the first part below to get you started, but you can find the rest on Berardi’s post about the interview.

I’m off to buy myself a bar of extra dark chocolate.  Have a lovely weekend everyone!
