Great links for the weekend!

There’s plenty to plough through this week, so I’ll get stuck straight in.

  • I’m sure plenty of women have been given the abuse that they “throw like a girl”.  In my case the abuse is often richly deserved – I was never great at throwing as a teenager and my skills at “throwing” an ice-axe when I was last mountaineering were laughable.  So I was incredibly interested to read an article by Eric Cressey (he of super shoulder-specialism fame) explaining that while it’s too late to rectify the problem fully, there is a bit of a minor solution for me.  I’m now determined to get my neice (currently age 4) to start practising throwing before she ends up with the throwing skills of her aunt!
  • Do you struggle to stay 100% compliant with some things?  Is it because you “like” doing the opposite?  Try reading this brief article for a bit of a wake-up call.
  • An interesting study was carried out recently on women who undertook a period of fasting.  Fasting caused the women to suffer from a decline in functional reach and also from impaired balance.  However, what the study wording implies is that the women were asked to abstain from all food and beverages and then concluded that the study showed that women should be educated not to skip meals.  However, these are not symptoms seen by those who follow programs of intermittent fasting (when you continue to drink plenty) so you have to wonder if dehydration was causing these effects.
  • I’m proud to say that I do strength training.  If the idea of strength training is a bit of a minefield for you and you’re not sure that you understand precisely what it involves then you can’t get it too wrong if you start with the guide to strength training that Ryan Andrews wrote for Precision Nutrition.
  • Well, here’s a sensitive topic.  Doing plenty of exercise is known to boost testosterone and often results in some extra bedroom activity.  However, if you have other problems that affect your libido then you may be glad to know that we may be a step closer to a Viagra for women.
  • If I’ve done a mammoth session in the gym and feel my muscles throbbing particularly hard then the first thing I turn to is a small protein shake.  It never crossed my mind that there could be a reason why I, as a woman, shouldn’t use a protein shake for this.  However, if you are someone who worries about this, “No Bull” Muscle Building did a brief article addressing this subject.  Their conclusion was that it’s not something to worry about as a woman.
  • For a bit of light relief and some animal magic, here’s a random photo of a very cute kitten.
  • Dr Briffa posted up an interesting article a few weeks ago about the possibility that zinc may enhance women’s moods.  This is great news for women who struggle with depression though I must say that I was glad to think that depression is generally not a problem I face when I read further down and saw that, of all meat and fish, he suggests that oysters are a particularly good source of zinc.  I really cannot cope with oysters.
  • Staying on the mood enhancing theme, I was really pleased when Chris at Conditioning Research posted an article highlighting research showing that laughter is good for you, not just because it cheers us up, but because it can do all sorts of genuinely good stuff for hormones and the body too.
  • There is a great site, part-comedy and part-serious for the “Shovelglove Community College”.  Timothy Williams has put together a series of articles about getting an excellent workout with the use of a shovelglove – a sledgehammer modified through the use of a jumper/towel wrapped around it.  If you happen to have a sledgehammer lying about and you haven’t got time to get to the gym this could well be the answer.

Most people know I like watching parkour.  Here’s a great TV advert which includes a good bit of parkour action.

Enjoy your weekend!
