Lots of women-specific information this week in one way or another but I’d be most worried about the cats…
- There are women out there who are IT geeks and gamer girls. They may be a rare species, much like women who do powerlifting, but they do exist. However, what are the chances of coming across a rare cross-breed of both powerlifter and gamer in a woman? Moe is one such individual and was recently interviewed on Nerd Fitness.
- A bit of a thought-provoking piece for this week on why couples may sometimes benefit from spending some time apart. A gentle reminder that you should ensure you continue to be an individual, no matter how strong your relationship is.
- Robb Wolf did a great piece a few weeks ago in which he discussed the benefits of feeding children a paleo diet, including the misconceptions associated with this subject. Particular highlights include the evidence that you don’t need to feed your children lots of full fat milk to help them grow their bones and they don’t need extra fortified foods to get all the nutrients that they require.
- I think I may have mentioned a little while ago that we appear to now have adopted a second cat that also lives with our neighbours. I was reminded of them when I saw this “article” on how to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you. I really hope our two visitors aren’t plotting against us!
- I only recently came to the conclusion that I needed to start using facial moisturiser. Up until then I had shunned all cosmetics, including the moisturisers and similar products. It was a terrifying minefield when I first stood looking at the aisle of moisturisers in the pharmacy and now I’m even more concerned having read the article on Zen to Fitness about the dangers lurking in conventional body products. Did I choose wisely enough?
- To cheer you up after that, I got a really good laugh out of this Polar Bear cartoon.
- I suspect we are all guilty of finding certain foods that work well for our diet and which have benefits for us. It’s something that Robb Wolf has warned against in some of his podcasts. I was therefore interested to see the BBC News website publish an article on this very topic and suggesting certain replacement foods for the previously well-flagged healthy foods, such as carrots, oranges and strawberries.
- I’m not a grappler, but if any of you are and you are a woman then you should be immediately alerted to Mistress Krista’s article with tips on grappling as a woman (eg. dealing with being smaller, lighter etc). Of course, I’m way behind the game posting this link, but better late than never. Oh, and if you’re a man (or a larger, heavier woman) who grapples, perhaps it’s worth reading this to see what cunning ploys your smaller or lighter foes may use against you.
- We would all like to successfully build some muscle so it was refreshing to see a simple reminder about building muscle. The key? Squats, deadlifts, other compound exercises and punctual rest periods. Simple, really!
Last week I included a TV ad with parkour so to continue the parkour theme a little bit I’ve found this series of videos on You Tube teaching you how to do the different parkour techniques. The video below is for the safety roll which is the same as the roll I was taught to do for Judo, but if you start with that you’ll find a whole host of other related videos on You Tube produced by the same guy which cover things like the tic-tac wall run, landings and even the history of parkour. I’m just trying to work out what the animal cry in the background on this video is – any suggestions?
Right. I’m going to go and keep a wary eye on the neighbour’s cats now to make sure they aren’t trying to kill me! If they are, I will try to escape with some parkour moves!
