I’m writing this on Thursday evening while sat in a hotel room. Before I get started with the links I wanted to share something amusing from the room service breakfast menu. It has a “Fit a la carte” selection section as follows:
- Option 1: High protein: Steak, mushrooms, poached eggs and tomato. I usually follow a scheme of intermittent fasting in the mornings, but this sounds too good to miss.
- Option 2: Low cholesterol: Egg white omelette with any 3 of tomato, peppers, onion or mushroom fillings. Not bad provided you live in the dark ages and still believe that eggs are bad for your cholesterol. Probably a good low-calorie choice though.
- Option 3: Low carb: Platter of sliced fresh fruits with natural or vanilla yoghurt. Excuse me? Low carb? Um… isn’t option 1 lower carb than this? In fact, this pretty much represents the food I was eating last year as my carb-up pre-workout meal!
I’m impressed that they are thinking outside the box a little when it comes to breakfast, rather than just offering the usual options of fried breakfast, cereal or continental breakfast. However I am also frustrated that common misconceptions still abound about eggs being bad for your cholesterol and bothered that people think that fruit and yoghurt is a low carb choice. It’s lower carb than toast or cereal but is in no way the lowest carb option on their menu.
I’m afraid it’s a limited list of links this week. Getting ready to go on holiday and dealing with lots of stuff at work in advance of that have been my priorities this week so I’m behind on my reading. I’ll probably be missing a links post entirely next week unless I can find a spare few minutes tomorrow morning before I go, but I promise a bumper post for my return week.
- I want to kick off with a poignant article on women and body image written by a man. Not only was it really accurate, it was interesting to read of from the male perspective and I’ve already recommended that Chris reads it. I think that anyone of either sex could read this article and take a lot away from it.
- I’m ashamed to say that I’ve only recently discovered the Iron Maiden’s blog. Sportsgirl has been training since she was 18, is now in her 30s and writes about some fascinating stuff, very much along similar themes to this blog. It’s great to find other women doing similar things and I really recommend you check out her Strongman performance at the end of May. Congratulations on a fanstastic performance!
- You’ve probably guessed that I have a bit of a cat theme going on these days. Anyway, here’s a brilliant humorous image for this week. Rock on!
- I tell anyone who’ll listen (and all those who don’t for that matter) that the reason I train is to build up bone density so that I can fall off my bike with impunity in old age and not worry about breaking lots of bones. So, I guess this guy, still cycling for charity at 80, is a good role model for the cycling part of that dream.
- A pregnancy link this week – leading nutritional experts are pressing for the recommendations for pregnant women to change to encourage higher fish consumption. So there’s another thing to increase in your diet, for all you pregnant ladies out there.
- There was a great article a while ago on Precision Nutrition about empty calories. I spend forever trying to explain to some people at work why they could quite easily cut calories by cutting out the latte and having a different non-frothed-milk drink. It’s amazing how difficult some people find this concept. There’s a sense that because it’s not food, but instead is a drink, somehow it can’t be that calorie laden. Think again!
Finally, to round it off at the end of what has been an incredibly tough week for me, thanks to Mike T Nelson for flagging up this motivational video. It’s an excellent reminder that things are never so bad that they can’t be overcome, so if you’re having a bad day in the gym (or a bad week, or a bad month) keep hoping and keep trying.
