Great links for the weekend!

June 25th, 2010 · No Comments · Links

I managed to find some time before I went on holiday to put together a proper links post for this week, making up for last week’s poor showing.  I hope you enjoy these.

  • You all know how much I rave about Bret Contreras, hip thrusts and most other things glute-related.  You’ve probably also guessed from the number of Tony Gentilcore links I post up that I really enjoy reading Tony’s often-witty blog.  So imagine how happy I was when Tony interviewed Bret for his blog.  There’s a part two as well!
  • I’m on holiday this week, walking in the Alps, so this link is on the walking theme.  Something that has been vital to reducing the impact of long-distance walks on my body has been to completely reduce the weight of my packs, since not walking is not an option and lots of heavy weight day after day can do horrid things to your knees and the soles of your feet.  For those of you out there who are also walkers, here’s Kathryn’s story about her changeover to being an “ultralight backpacker” and some detail about the kit she uses.
  • I’m fascinated by rope climbing.  That and pole climbing seem to be such real wilderness skills (although I’m thinking that rope climbing would be limited to tropical forests with tough vines hanging out of the trees).  Begin 2 Dig did a great article a while back about the resurgence of rope climbing, including a video from a recent rope-climbing competition in the Czech Republic.
  • Some weeks ago I had a rant about women being made to feel that they need to achieve unachievable figures thanks to the secrets of digital retouching of images.  I was therefore really interested to read an article on Stumptuous about reverse retouching to flesh out models who are too thin.  Unfortunately the end results are the same – unachievable figures.
  • Rebecca Romero is one of the UK’s up and coming cycling stars who has already had some brilliant results.  She was interviewed on the Guardian newspaper’s weekly bike podcast a few weeks ago about all sorts of topics including the fact that her two Olympic cycling events have both been removed from the Olympics for 2012.  Well worth a listen to remember the great things female athletes can achieve (and how unassuming they often are).  It’s also got an article by Helen Pidd, one of the female journalists, interviewing some women taking part in the Etape Caledonia.  Having driven over that particular course, it’s definitely one of the tougher UK Etapes!
  • I loved this article about Why are Bananas Junk Food?  It says everything I feel like ranting about when people eat a banana while they are on a diet and say to me “I can’t understand why I’m not losing weight.  I’m starving most of the time and being healthy eating fruit all the time.”  If only they could understand.
  • Chris has started doing a series of book reviews on The Garage Gym Online.  It’s fantastic since I’m now getting all the abridged versions of the books on the shelf, leaving me to only read the ones I think are particularly good.  I am particularly interested in his review of Biomarkers and definitely you have a read of the review – I’m sure you’ll want to read the book once you’ve read about it.  It’s definitely a book I’ll be reading rather than relying on Chris telling me the salient points.
  • Barefoot running has had plenty of attention in the last year, not least from me on this blog!  For a brief update the Science in Sport guys did a lovely article about trying to find the neutral view in the contentious debate area of barefoot running.  Worth a read if barefoot running is a topic you are interested in and if you have strong views either way.
  • I really enjoyed an article on Zen to Fitness thinking about important lessons we can learn from famous athletes.  These are not just “how to train” lessons but the more inspirational lessons of things like modesty, dedication and simplicity.  Very good for an inspirational read.
  • Dr Briffa did a good post raising awareness of a herbal remedy for the symptoms of PMS.  It’s not something I’d heard of before but then, I haven’t had any problems with my PMS since I fully converted to a low carb paleo diet.  However, for those of you who do have PMS problems and who haven’t yet found a good solution, perhaps it would be worth checking out Agnus castus.

A big of comedy to finish off.  This is a clip of Jim Gaffigan doing some stand-up about camping, waking up in the morning, and bacon.  I had never heard of Jim Gaffigan before I was sent this link – I was impressed.
