Great links for the weekend!

July 9th, 2010 · No Comments · Links

I’ve been unwell this week.  Surprisingly this didn’t give me much more time to do my reading since I couldn’t stand concentrating on print on the screen for long periods of time.  When I did it all rapidly turned into nonsense and incomprehensible shapes on the page.

However, I did find a few interesting titbits to keep you all entertained for the weekend, in between watching numerous episodes of X-Files.  Did you know that Jack Black features in one of the early Series 3 episodes (and I could have sworn I saw Lucy Lu in one of the later ones too)?  Also, did you know that one of the episodes from the same series is like a mini-version of “Lake Placid” without the comedic lines?

Ok, I know you aren’t interested in a running commentary of the whole of Series 3 of the X-Files.  I’ll move onto the links instead.

  • Many thanks go to Bret Contreras.  His Random Thoughts post this week provided a couple of the other links in this list.  However, I’m actually kicking off with this because Bret provides an excellent list of several women’s blogs he currently reads.  It’s a great list, not only because I feature on it (I feel totally honoured though it’s really odd seeing my name on the list) but because I have to concur that those are also my go-to women-specific resources.  I’d also add Gubernatrix’s blog to the list.  All Round Strength Training is not a women-specific blog, but some of her content is really inspirational, especially knowing it’s been written by a woman who is involved in strength activities.
  • I seriously loved this short cartoon video of Mario vs Pacman.  I defy you not to laugh yourself silly and watch it at least twice (provided you start out knowing who both Mario and Pacman are, of course).
  • Ironsport Gym in Glenolden, PA will be hosting an amateur strongwoman contest on August 8th.  You can find out more information on the Catalyst Athletics Forum.
  • If you want to learn more about how the female brain works (perhaps I should buy this for my partner for Christmas?) it may be worth reading this book review and considering getting the book.
  • I mentioned I’d been watching X-Files while I was ill.  Perhaps NephroPal has too.  Something must have inspired the article “Is there life out there?
  • I love eating meat.  Nothing beats a big bowl of beef casserole or a hunk of steak.  Similarly I love fish, especially the meatier fish like trout, salmon and prawns (yes, I know they aren’t technically a “fish”).  However, it is only fair to consider all sides of an argument and I don’t hold anything against vegans.  They ought to be aware of a few potential pitfalls in their diet though.
  • This next link needs very little introduction other than it’s title: “Does Sex Affect Muscle Growth?”  Read the article to find out the answer!  To follow up, if you want to know more ways to increase your testosterone levels naturally, read Mark Sisson’s incredibly detailed article on everything testosterone-related.
  • The New York Times has done a brilliant article highlighting the current lack of exercise research done on females.  When I’m researching my articles I tend to place more emphasis on research that has been done with female participants since the results are more likely to be reliable in application to me own body and physiology (as a woman).  There’s been a bit of debate about whether women do need different training methods to men (the Women’s Strength Training Network on Facebook have been discussing this very topic this week), but this article from NYT seems to really put some science behind the idea that we truly are different.
  • Ms Paltrow has reportedly been diagnosed with osteopenia.  I have a strange feeling I may have mentioned it in last week’s links post, but Tony Gentilcore wrote a fantastic article about it this week.  It’s good to know people like Tony remain firmly behind the women’s cause!
  • Staying with Tony’s blog for a moment longer, Tony highlighted some consumer research which showed certain protein supplements to contain fairly extreme levels of one or two heavy metals.
  • Finally, something important for the ladies.  A review of a self-defence class which I think runs in the US.  This attendee certainly thought it was well-worth her time.

For this week’s video slot you get two for the price of one.

Firstly, I felt like a proud mother-hen when I got to witness (and record) Chris doing a one-arm chin.  He’s been working at them for a while so it was great to see one of his first full unassisted reps (actually his fourth, but this was the first proper one that I got to see).  He’s got a new project now to build that up to a series of reps but congratulations on getting past the first rep milestone!

At the extreme of the spectrum, here’s an inspiring video of Konstantinov doing a massive 325kg squat.  That is the sort of quality squat I’m aiming for!
