Great links for the weekend!

July 30th, 2010 · No Comments · Links

Right everyone.  It’s been a busy week for me and I’ve put together a busy collection of links to match – a bumper issue for anyone who fancies some extra reading this weekend.

  • Something unusual to start off with.  I was wondering, after Mark Sisson did an excellent post about cooking with sea vegetables (seaweed), how Chris would react to a plateful of the stuff.  Fortunately for him we live a few miles away from the furthest point in the UK from any coastline, so he probably won’t need to find out quite yet.
  • I don’t do any outdoors swimming.  I’ve certainly thought about it and Chris and I have frequently discussed the possibility of trips to the Lake District including brief swims in some of the more secluded tarns.  With that in mind it was useful to read some tips on hygiene relating to lake swimming since those are things I will need to bear in mind if I ever do try my hand at tarn-swimming.
  • I am a hug-lower.  In fact, you could say I have an addiction to hugs.  Chris was definitely thinking of me when he saw this cartoon and forwarded it on!
  • It’s not quite the end of summer holiday bikini season.  With that in mind, there is still a little bit of time to develop that sexy-brazilian butt!
  • I was amused to read an article on T-Nation about the Green Faces Diet.  It seems like the ultimate easy way to do something like the paleo diet without creating a huge or complex list of foods that you can or can’t eat.  In fact, the only places that the Green Faces diet really differs from the Paleo Diet is the inclusion of peas, beans and other green legumes and the exclusion of non-green vegetables.  However, for simplicity the Green Faces diet definitely wins.
  • The New York Times did an interesting piece on the reasons that women are still struggling to reach the top places in their careers.  It makes for worthwhile reading for any women who are pursuing careers, especially in areas that continue to be dominated by men.
  • For some motivational dieting, read about Sonya D, a comedian who lost an incredible amount of weight using the slow and steady technique of cooking Real Food for herself.  It’s a success story worth sharing.
  • Richard Nikoley did a really exciting course a few weeks ago which seemed to be getting him back to his primal roots.  He wrote up each day as he did it on his blog and it certainly sounded like something I would love to do if it wasn’t on the opposite side of the pond.  I wonder if anyone in the UK is doing something similar?  Meanwhile, if you are interested in Primal living and you live close enough then it could be worth checking this out.
  • Kellie Evert, the progenitor of competitive female bodybuilding, was recently interviewed for Bodybuilding.com.  It’s well worth reading the interview and accompanying article to learn a bit more about the history of this female sport.
  • I’ve seen articles slamming soy and others which comment on it’s historic use in Asian diets.  It’s hard to know what the truth is about the history of the Asian diet which differs so much from our own traditional diet in the Western world and it was interesting to see that even with research, Stephan on the Whole Health Source Blog still couldn’t get to the bottom of it all.
  • I started with Mark Sisson and I’ll wrap up the links with another Mark Sisson article.  This time and amusing way to pass the time in the park by using persistence hunting.  I suspect that if I tried it someone would probably string me up for harassment so take care when trying this at home…

With that I’m going to go and see if I can source a hug without a computer screen to get in the way.  Perhaps the neighbours cat will oblige me.
