Great links for the weekend!

August 13th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Links

I’ve got loads of links backing up, so there might be a few slightly out of date links over the next couple of weeks.  Here’s the start of clearing the backlog – I hope theres a few for everyone to enjoy here.

  • I’m going to start us off with something quite technical this week.  About a month ago a study was published suggesting that there is real health benefits in doing a regular (eg. once a week) session of negative exercise.  That’s not negative in the sense of “bad” but negative in the sense of concentrating on the “return” phase of the exercise.  I used them a lot to get to my first pull up, stepping up onto a box to get to the top position and then lowering myself to the start in a slow and controlled manner.  Not long after that came out, Terry Stokes wrote an article about using negative accentuated exercise for Figure Athletes (going slowly through the negative movement).  Interesting stuff.
  • On the Paleo front, let’s start by flagging up a community site for sharing Paleo recipes.  There’s loads of stuff on here.  So much that I’m wondering if my weekly recipes should be made obsolete!
  • This cat photo is positively terrifying.  I can’t work out if he’s trying to eat it, or just sharpening his teeth on it.
  • I’m interested in staying young (and healthy) for as long as possible.  I was really interested in this article about a study which seemed to imply that scientists have potentially found a critical biochemical pathway linked to the aging of human muscle. By manipulating it, the researchers were able to restore the muscle’s ability to repair and rebuild itself, offering hope for injury repair and anti-aging techniques in the future.  The science-fiction novels are starting to come true.
  • I’m really taken by this recipe for beef tongue, but given Chris’s reaction to beef heart stir-fry (he claimed to be living with Hannibal’s grand-daughter), I’m not sure how he would react to slices of tongue.
  • Chris has done a fabulous set of psychic octopus predictions for the fitness industry over the next 12 months.  Have a read and see if you agree with him.  Do you have some better predictions?
  • A new study found that women are at their most beautiful at the age of 31, so I’ve got a couple of years to go yet.  Of course, something like this was bound to then kick of various comedic articles, since it is silly-season for news in the UK.
  • I’ve written before about the after-burn effect where heavy resistance training or intervals leave you continuing to burn fat after you finish the workout.  Well, it seems that a recent study has supported the idea that the fitter you are (measured in VO2 max) the more fat you will burn during that after-burn phase.  So the fitter you are the easier it is to get slim.
  • I just loved this intermittent fasting joke from Chris at Conditioning Research.
  • Most people who read this blog know that I do a lot of stuff outdoors.  One of the things that I consistently suffer with is the rubbing caused by my backpack straps pushing my fat sports-bra straps into my shoulder bones.  One solution is to (very slowly) build up some protective muscle.  However, I really liked the look of this sports bra.  Looks absolutely perfect for active women.
  • Finally, a vital announcement for all those in the UK.  Apple season is upon us so it’s time to go foraging and start locating those apple trees in order to get free apples for the next 6 months.  Once I saw this article I also found that I started spotting wild apple trees all over the place on our local 8 mile saunter.

For the last few weeks I’ve been doing push ups again.  I was really pleased to read an article on Fitness Black Book which confirmed that press ups should be a great thing for improving my bench press.  And then I saw this video and realised I had a long way to go:

Her Turkish Get-up is astounding too:

How’s that for female inspiration?  I’m off to a wedding tomorrow and then I’m inspired to hit the gym hard to get those push up gains I’m after.  Have a good weekend everyone!

    Thanks for the links!

I don’t think another website doing Paleo recipes means you should discontinue yours (unless you don’t actually enjoy that part). I’m constantly finding new sites to look at–meaning there will be those who come to your site and find the recipes useful on many levels, who will never hear of that other site (besides if they see this post :-) ).

    Those videos are definitely inspiring!

I love doing the recipes so have no fear – they’ll keep coming (as long as I can keep coming up with new ideas that is…).
